Why local knowledge matters in garden design

It may not be grim up North – in fact, it’s stunning- but Workington weather can be challenging for gardeners.

Local knowledge of the Cumbrian climate, geography, and soil conditions is essential when designing a garden that will thrive and give years of pleasure.

Key issues include:

High rainfall

Parts of Cumbria have the highest levels of rainfall in the UK, and without careful planning, Workington Garden can suffer from poor drainage, root rot, and compacted soils. Plants that dislike wet conditions may not enjoy life in low-lying flower beds.

We address these issues by incorporating solutions into our landscaping designs. These may include installing rain gardens to manage stormwater runoff, applying grit to waterlogged soil, and creating raised flower beds to improve soil drainage.

Cool temperatures and a short growing season

Workington has a cooler climate and earlier frosts than many more southerly and sheltered parts of the UK.

Cooler temperatures and frosts shorten the growing season, and this is a major consideration when we choose plants and shrubs for your garden.

We like to choose frost-resistant varieties and plants that can be planted later in the spring. Of course, it is always best to use native species as they are acclimated to the local conditions.

Strong winds

Workington is a coastal town, so gardens need to withstand regular onshore breezes and occasional wild weather.

Depending on your location, your garden makeover may require garden walls, windbreaks, and robust staking to protect the planting.

Slugs and snails

Slugs and snails love wet conditions, but, as nature lovers, we wouldn’t advocate employing any chemical methods to get rid of them. Instead, we include slug deterrents in our garden designs, like raised beds and gravel barriers.

Acidic and variable soils

Local soil can be acidic, but it can also be heavy and waterlogged.

Mediterranean plants that thrive in dry conditions and light soil may not be happy in Workington without a lot of coaxing, but there are plenty of native plants that will love your new garden.

Eco-friendly design and garden landscaping

Our garden makeovers in Workington are created with sustainable materials, and we source as much locally as we can.

We are passionate about landscape design that protects nature and encourages local wildlife.

Many of our garden design clients in Workington ask us to incorporate wild corners, wildflower meadows and hedgehog highways into our designs, and we are always delighted to do so.

The hard features of your landscaping project

We love using natural stone and local materials for garden walls, patios, and paving.

These hard features may serve practical functions, but should also be beautiful and fit in with the aesthetic of your garden design and the surrounding area.

We can also incorporate living walls, water features, raised decks, outdoor kitchens, seating areas and even a fire pit into your garden makeover design.

We create the garden design, then work with local landscaping experts to turn it into a reality.

About Workington

Workington is a coastal town on the Solway Firth, to the West of the beautiful Lake District.

Its geography includes low-lying coastal plains bordered by the Cumbrian Mountains to the southeast.

The area has a maritime climate with cool summers and relatively mild winters influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. Rainfall is spread fairly evenly across the year, though autumn and winter are the wettest.

Workington experiences persistent cloud cover, brisk coastal winds, and occasional storms moving in from the Irish Sea, shaping both the town’s environment and daily life.
