This project involved developing a completely new garden plot located in the heart of Beccles. For many individuals, the prospect of tackling a fresh garden space can be quite daunting, particularly one like this with its predominantly L-shaped layout. The primary challenge was to seamlessly integrate the two distinct sides of the garden to ensure a harmonious flow throughout.

One of the key challenges encountered was the soil conditions typical of new developments. Often, the ground becomes highly compacted due to the use of builder’s machinery and the presence of site huts. Moreover, significant amounts of building materials are typically buried rather than removed, resulting in poor soil quality and drainage, posing considerable challenges for planting.

Another aspect addressed in this project was the need for privacy screening due to the abundance of fencing. A combination of evergreen and deciduous shrubs was strategically employed to provide year-round interest and effectively screen the boundaries.

The patio area was strategically surrounded by flower borders to ensure visibility from indoors, recognizing that gardens are not always utilized throughout the year. At a pivotal corner, Amelanchier trees were utilized to introduce visual interest and create a designated seating area.

During the design phase, provision was made for a summer house; however, during the construction process, it was decided to replace it with a circular seating area positioned further down the garden. This flexibility in design allowed for adjustments based on evolving client preferences and considerations such as light levels and usage patterns, especially pertinent in a new build scenario.

The accompanying photos were captured just 12 months following the completion of planting and two months after the installation of the back lawn. Effective ground preparation coupled with diligent watering practices facilitated the rapid establishment of a beautiful and mature garden space.
