Courtyard gardens make the most of limited space, particularly in small Lakeland towns where outdoor space is at a premium. They can be very special places, as they tend to be more intimate and provide an outdoor sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the town. However, there size can also make them quite challenging to design. Attention to detail is vital if you want to create a stunning outdoor area. The secret is to manage the space correctly as this effects the ambience you create.

In most courtyard gardens privacy is a key requirement as is softening boundary walls and introducing planting to soften the hard materials and create movement, add scent, and bring the garden to life.
In the pictures below I have added planting and water features to create a peaceful outdoor area. The gardens I design can support a wide range of wildlife. However, the challenge in a small space is choosing those that will have the most beneficial impact.

There is rarely a lawn in my courtyard gardens, but I do not allow the paving to become overpowering. Since Roman times, water has played a key role in courtyard gardens. In most gardens I introduce a water feature. These can be raised pools for fish or simple sandstone water features which creates the sound of running water.
