Classic gardens are probably my favourite to design because I love naturalistic and romantic gardens, drawing inspiration from some of the most beautiful landscapes around us in this part of the north of England.

The garden illustrated on this page is a typical traditional garden with its formal layout and strong sense of symmetry to create a sense of order and structure to what had previously been a cluttered garden.

Traditional gardens are known for their mixed planting schemes with trees, shrubs, perennials, and bulbs used to provide a long season of interest. Here colour, texture and scent are important. In this planting scheme roses, paeonies and lavender were used plus hundreds of tulip and allium bulbs.
Plants were chosen to span the seasons. In this garden I used Tulips and alliums play a vital part in providing early colour in the garden.

Then I used early summer planting such as Roses, Irises and Geraniums and then Rudbeckias and Sedums for late summer and winter when their seed heads continue to provide structure.

Garden structures such as arbours, summerhouses, pergolas, and gazebos are important. In this garden we used an arbour to add vertical interest and a shaded seating area for quiet contemplation.

In other traditional gardens I have used single pergolas to create a pergola walk. This again provides structure to the garden as well as a vertical support to climbers. Often these pergola walks wind their way through the garden with paths lined with perennial planting adding to the charm and beauty of the garden.
