Front Gardens create the first impression of your home, and a well-designed and landscaped front garden can increase its kerb appeal, add to the value of your home, and make it more desirable and saleable in the future.

Today easy vehicular access is crucial, with the increasing number of cars in a family, parking space is at a premium. In this large front garden, I needed to increase the room to park, manage the slope, use materials that would absorb the rainwater running down the slope and make it wildlife friendly and low maintenance.

If you have a large front garden the layout can often be confusing. Pathways, lighting, and plantings can guide them to the front door and create a sense of arrival. In this garden the paved area is by the front door, so visitors know which door to go to.

On a lot of new build developments, the amount of front garden is very minimal. In lots of designs, I substitute the lawn for gravel or slate and grow plants through them. This allows you to create informal paths between the plants and a more bio diverse habitat for wildlife.

Front gardens can provide important environmental benefits, such as absorbing rainwater and providing habitat for wildlife. Choosing the right plants and incorporating sustainable design practices can further enhance these benefits. Gravel and slate are very popular in my designs as they are permeable which means the water can drain rather than run off onto the road.

Finally, you need to be aware if you live in a National Park or a conservation area, such as the Lakes or Northumberland, planning guidelines can affect what you can or cannot do. This does not relate to just trees but also the type of boundary you can have.
