Designing a wildlife-friendly garden involves creating a habitat that supports a diverse range of wildlife species.
All my planting schemes include a wide range of plants to enhance the local biodiversity and to support wildlife throughout the year. These include plants with berries, seeds, and nectar-rich flowers that flowers at different times of the year to ensure a continuous food supply. The selection of pictures below are all gardens designed to support wildlife.
In several of the pictures, I have used small trees such as Rowans and Crab Apples to provide a valuable source of early nectar in the garden, shelter and breeding places for our wildlife. The berries on the Rowan are rich source of food for birds in the autumn. All the perennials I use are pollinators and attract bees and butterflies to the garden. The border is designed to flower at different times of the year to ensure a continuous food supply and plenty of interest for you.
When I plant your garden, I will always add compost to improve the health of the soil. I also mulch with bark as this helps keep the moisture in the soil and suppresses the weeds.
Water is also important for wildlife for drinking, bathing, and breeding. Shallow wildlife ponds with easy access in and out are fantastic but a simple pot turned on its side or a bowl will provide a source of water for all sorts of wildlife.
